FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do parents choose a yeshiva education for their children?

Many yeshiva parents choose a religious education for their children because it is central to their cultural identity, and because it teaches the importance of community, a deep respect for one’s traditions and heritage, a high level of ethics and morals, and those qualities that make a good citizen: honesty, integrity, and commitment. Yeshivas also help build the strong bonds of family, as children may often attend the same yeshivas their parents attended.

What do yeshiva students learn?

Although school curriculum varies, yeshivas focus on the study of sacred religious texts, such as the Torah and the Talmud, to develop critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as Jewish literature, philosophy, and ethics. Secular coursework may include English and foreign languages, math, history, and science.

How does a yeshiva prepare students for adulthood?

A yeshiva education is a rigorous one that requires discipline inside and outside the classroom, the same kind of discipline and willpower needed to succeed in professional life. Coursework often presents students with complex moral and ethical issues that one may later encounter as an adult. Yeshiva students learn to approach challenges with careful analysis and penetrating inquiry, develop solutions on their own, and argue their respective viewpoint persuasively – skills they will continue to cultivate as they mature.

Yeshiva instruction also instills in young people a strong sense of self-worth, helping to shape them into active citizens dedicated to bettering their communities. Students go on to lead careers at Fortune 500 companies, own businesses, and contribute to the fields of law, religion, education, medicine and technology – all while balancing their professional goals with a deep commitment to family and faith.

Why has this organization been created?

Most New Yorkers are unfamiliar with yeshivas and the education they offer. Parents for Educational and Religious Liberty in Schools was founded to inform the public about why tens of thousands of parents choose to send their children to these schools.

What is a yeshiva?

A yeshiva is a Jewish educational institution that covers elementary and secondary schooling specializing in religious instruction. For decades, the yeshiva education system has anchored entire communities in New York, producing successful members of society and providing stability for thousands of families, while simultaneously fostering in students a life-long thirst for knowledge.

Are yeshivas in New York considered private schools?

Yes. Parents pay tuition to educate their children in the yeshiva school system. Scholarships are provided to members of the community who cannot afford tuition.

Leadership

Through the guidance of well-known and accomplished individuals in the Jewish Community and beyond, embodies the interest of parents who are committed to sending their children to Yeshivas, in such neighborhoods as Borough Park, Crown Heights, and Williamsburg.

ABE DEUTSCH Lead Developer
For generations, parents have chosen a yeshiva education because yeshivas teach students how to live a life filled with meaning, and provide a moral and ethical framework for their years beyond school. It is an education that has allowed my family to thrive in the modern world while maintaining religious practices and beliefs that that have sustained the Jewish people for thousands of years, often through extreme hardship.   ABE DEUTSCH

“My parents enrolled me in yeshiva, I’ve enrolled my children, and I hope my children do the same someday. My time in yeshiva taught me the importance of community, nurtured a love of learning and equipped me with the skills to be professionally successful as a web designer and as a manager of a workforce development program.” ARI GREENBERG

“While critics may not appreciate or understand the high-quality instruction that takes place at institutions such as these, colleges and universities such as Long Island University certainly do – it recognized the vast majority of my undergraduate credits from my yeshiva. I’m a successful licensed social worker because of the educational foundation provided by my yeshiva, which prepared me to earn an advanced degree and succeed personally and professionally.” Levi Oberlander
